In an age where access to the internet is deemed a human right, continued shutdowns are more harmful than they are helpful. Africa internet shutdowns are second only to Asia, buoyed by a desire to silence popular voices, quell protests and “maintain order”.

Empirical evidence suggests that more is lost rather than political control gained through shutdowns, and the political and economic effects are real. Trust between governments and citizens is diminished or destroyed - both at the ordinary person’s level and further with business owners. In her talk, Rebecca will give insights into the economic and other effects of Internet shutdowns in Cameroon and other countries and discuss strategies to convince governments to #keepiton
