Sunshine, Water, Soil – All You Need is Tech?

Kurzthese

There are currently seven billion people inhabiting this world. By 2050, the global population will reach 9 billion. The challenge: How can we all be fed?

As of late, a groundswell of start-ups and technologies in sub-Saharan Africa have emerged to help smallholder farmers increase efficiency and thus productivity. Most of them using cutting-edge technologies. Are digital technologies the key to success or should we seek elsewhere to solve our challenge?

Beschreibung

Together with the crowd of re:publica Accra, we want to portray new technologies in the agritech sector and discuss their feasibility for use cases on the ground. We will highlight fresh projects that are currently using new technologies such as internet of things or big data and see if and how these can be mainstreamed.

The audience will not only discuss and learn how technologies, such as “weather bombs” for hyper-local weather data, can be used in transforming the agricultural sector, but they can give valuable input on how to best achieve this. One aspect of the discussion would be how multinational tech companies and start-ups can collaborate in Africa. How can they co-create and enhance business models in the sector whilst maximizing value creation on the continent? Another is how to support African agriculture value chains and share a vision to support food security. The Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development of Germany (BMZ) is eager to jointly find a path to better address this priority of food security and agriculture through tech.
