The Glass Room Experience: Data & Privacy Exhibition and Learning Space

Short thesis

The Glass Room Experience is an eye-catching, accessible self-learning pop-up installation on data and privacy.

Description

What is personal data in an age when our data is everything but personal? Our websites, apps, social media and ‘smart’ devices all thrive on the same thing that makes tech companies billions – data. Not just any data, but our data. The Glass Room Experience explores the companies and mechanisms that make our everyday technologies as well as connect the Internet of Things (IoT).

As a key feature of the Glass Room Experience, we will be showcasing the Data Detox Kit. The Data Detox Kit is an 8-day step-by-step guide on how to reduce data traces online. Each day has a different focus - from cleaning up your apps, to social media, to your phone's connectivity - informing you of the data processes, walking you through some changes you can make, and giving you a small challenge at the end of each day.

At re:publica Accra we want to give others the opportunity to host their own Glass Room Experience. There will be entire exhibitions available for people who would like to host their own within their communities. We also hope to co-develop and expand the exhibition, as well as the Data Detox Kit, in order to contexualise it in a variety of different contexts. If you are interested in hosting and/or collaborating, please don't hesitate to get in contact with us.

This session is an ongoing activity that will take place continuously on both days at the Digital Rights Lounge.
