Douglas has been an editor on English language Wikipedia since 2006. He has been involved in Wikimedia South Africa since 2012 when he joined the board and helped organised the chapter's first large event, the South African component of Wiki Loves Monuments, the largest photographic competition in the world. Since then he as organised the 2013 and 2014 Wiki Loves Monuments competitions, organised a number of edit-a-thons, and the Wiki From Above photographic competition. In 2018 he was the organising chairperson for Wikimania 2018, the official annual international Wikipedia conference, and was deeply involved in both bringing the event to South Africa for the first time and in organising the event.
Douglas has led the chapter's efforts to promote Freedom of Panorama in South Africa since 2014. This advocacy effort has expanded to include efforts to change South Africa's Fair Dealing copyright foundation to a Fair Use legal foundation instead. He has presented to the South African Parliament on the need for copyright reform and is involved in efforts to promote copyright reform that benefits average people and open use globally.
He is always interested in projects that encourage more people to edit Wikipedia and contribute to Wikimedia Commons. Douglas is also interested in public policy and the role it plays in the free knowledge movement. He currently lives in Cape Town, South Africa and in his day job works in technology, data collection, and crime reduction. He has a strong interest in economics, history, technology and public policy.
